Transponder Chip Keys

Jaguar introduced a brand new key design for its cars in 1998. The keys required specialized equipment to program. These keys have a transponder chip inside that disables the vehicle's standard immobiliser system. They need to be integrated into Jaguar's database of keys, which is usually done by a dealer, or locksmith. Contrary to what many believe, not all locksmiths or dealers are able to handle these types of keys. In fact, some have been known to overcharge Jaguar owners for their services.

Tibbe Keys

Some Jaguars from the 1990s used a key type known as a Tibbe key. They require specialized equipment to create since they have flat cuts with precise angles on four different sides. Dealerships can also cut them however they will charge a significant amount.

The lock itself is interesting, as it consists of either 6 or 8 rotary discs that need to be properly aligned in order for the sidebar to slide into place and allow access to the trunk or door lock. This is done by using a special-looking pick/decoder tool that appears like a drill bit and it can be a bit challenging. This tool is only to be used for the DOOR lock and not on the trunk or ignition lock.

There are a handful of locksmiths who specialize in Tibbe keys, and their costs are based on many factors including time effort, cost, consumables, equipment and more. The adapter kit that is specialized to work on these types of keys can cost a few hundred dollars, and every one must be crafted manually (or a skilled programmer can create it using the computerized key machine) for each new key made.

Key Fob Battery Replacement

Most key fob batteries wear out over time, so it's essential to have an extra battery in your inventory. When the key fob stops responding to buttons or ceases to respond to them, it's probably time to replace it. Your Message Center may also alert you that the battery is low.

The good news is that replacing the battery in your Jaguar key fob is easy and can take only a few minutes in your home garage. The first step is to remove the key fob with either a flat-head screwdriver. You can tear the two seams connecting the halves of the key fob to reveal the blade.

Remind yourself to only touch the battery from the sides. If you touch it from the top and bottom can cause moisture to be transferred and reduce the battery's life.
